Chapter Seven
Fake It ‘Til You Make It
Is Motivation a Myth?
Motivation is defined as the general desire or willingness of someone to do something, or the reason one has for acting or behaving in a particular way.[6]
Basically, we act according to what we believe is true. Our reason. Our Big Why. No one ever wakes up and says, “Today, I feel like going to the dentist.” You don’t just wait for the morning when you feel like going to the dentist. You book an appointment that holds you accountable because you know it’s important to take care of your teeth. Even though it can be unpleasant, it has to be done.
This is why motivation is a myth.
If we wait to feel like doing hard or uncomfortable things, we will never do them. If we continually rely on feelings and emotions to guide our choices, we will never break through to a new place.
When we hear the word motivation, most of us have a positive reaction. We think of inspirational videos, quotes, and people who have great success stories. We see someone going after their dreams or training for a marathon, and we think, “Wow. That person is really motivated.”
Do you think she stayed on the couch and waited to feel like bundling up and running 10 miles in the rain?
Not a chance.
Instead, she made a commitment and a choice. She takes action based on what she values in her life, not how she feels. If she’s running a marathon, fitness and health are something she values, so her action isn’t based on how she feels. She’s motivated by her ultimate reason and purpose and makes a decision based on that.
Motivation is all about choices.
